Mammoth Mountain looks nice and frosty this morning as it revels in a fresh coat of white. Cold, light and fluffy, there are bound to be places where the snow is deeper than the reported two inches. Now to find it…

Oren Tanzer just sent over this photo of Julien Lecorps, taken this morning (Monday). Some people might think the freshies would be all gone by now, but if anyone knows where to find them, Julien and Derek Shea do.

The snow is so fun! There are two feet of fresh snow on Mammoth Mountain and in some spots the wind has piled it up to even more. On Saturday the Upper Gondola opened to skiers and snowboarders around 11:30am, and much fun was paid off to those who waited it out. By Sunday the Unbound had used this new snow to build some jumps on Forest Trail and soon they’ll begin building the Super Pipe.
Skiing and snowboarding within the trees and off groomed areas is still not advised this time of year. Many natural obstacles such as rocks and tree stumps are thinly covered by a soft layer of snow that is not hardpacked and easily scraped off. Please use caution. Pay attention, be smart and be safe.

All I want for Christmas is three little words: Winter Storm Watch.
When will it snow in Mammoth? Should I still come for Christmas? Is there going to be any snow in the next ten days? Is Canyon Lodge going to be open when I get there? You’re not alone if you’re asking yourself these questions. This morning Mammoth weather man Howard Sheckter answered them by concluding his report with, “It really looks like the storm doors are opening and we’ll have a plentiful snowpack by Christmas.” As I drove up Minaret to my Main Lodge office and listened intently to Howard’s report I heard details of a Thursday afternoon through Friday night storm that is forecasted to drop two feet of snow above 6,000 feet. Saturday looks to be cold, and sunny skies are predicted to re-appear Sunday. Perfect weekend.

On the first day of December my truelove gave to me,
Twelve snowmaking guns on Cornice Bowl,
Eleven racers on Fascination,
Ten slayers shredding,
Nine rails for sliding,
Eight jibbers jibbing,
Seven jumpers jumping,
Six chairlifts running,
Five ski patrol patrolling,
Four chunks of cold weather ski wax,
a Three-second lift line,
Two storms in the forecast,
and a snow cloud perched over a pine tree.

Mammoth Dreams: The Story of Dave McCoy, the new documentary of the life of Mammoth Mountain founders Dave and Roma McCoy, will air on San Diego’s KPBS Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2007 at 10pm PST.
By San Diego filmmaker Chirs Pyle, the film uses archival film footage, photos and interviews to tell the story about how founder and former first-class ski racer Dave McCoy came to the area in the 1930’s. Starting with a homemade rope-tow powered by the back wheel of a pick-up truck, McCoy defied naysayers as he developed the California mountain resort. McCoy, now in his 90s, Mammoth CEO Rusty Gregory and many more are interviewed.
