Last Week to Ride June Mountain

March 31, 2008

June Mountain

The last day to ride June Mountain will be Sunday, April 6, 2008.

It’s always pleasantly surprising how different the weather can be just 30 minutes north on the 395. On Sunday the sky was stormy at Mammoth but clear, sunny, and beautiful at June. At the ticket office we couldn’t help commenting, “It’s crappy in Mammoth,” and the guy behind the counter said with a smile, “That’s our motto.”

This week you’ll see a HUGE series of jumps built on Schatzi for a private snowboarding event. You can’t miss it – a cool thing to see.

Coming Soon – June Mountain!

June Mountain 2006/07
June Mountain is on schedule to open for the 2007/08 season on Saturday, Dec. 15. June is one of my favorite places to spend a day so I’m counting down the minutes – especially ’cause they have new snow! If you’ve never made the 20-minute drive from Mammoth I totally recommend going, but it’s so beyond-words-beautiful that I can’t go into too much detail…just trust the advice. June reports 22 inches of fresh snow from the Dec. 7-8 storm. Save the June Mountain Snow Report number in your cell phone (760.934.2224), bundle up for your first ascent of J1 and you’re ready for the season. I’ll see you there on Saturday.

June Mountain Now Closed

February 1, 2007

June Mountain closed for the season Sunday, Jan. 28. After a late opening and an early closing, all due to challenging weather and lack of natural snowfall, June was open for 24 days this season. The famous parks were built up with lots of rails and boxes (there was not enough snow for jumps), ten trails were open, and the base was about 1 foot. Unfortunately this was not enough to provide a quality experience for skiers and snowboarders. June Passholders are now able to use their passes at Mammoth.

Sunday at June was surreal. It was snowing lightly. Lifties hung their heads, but by 4pm the bartenders were sharing drinks and songs in a merry spirit, toasting to the good fortune of a better season next year.
